Ever wondered how many calories you are burning a day?
The amount of calories you burn per day is called your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). A person’s BMR is affected by their age, gender, weight and activity level.
Below is the formula to determine the base line amount of calories you need to live per day. The activity level table at the bottom of the page will give you the number of actual calories you burn per day with exercise factored into the equation.
BMR = (9.99 x weight + 6.25 x height – 4.92 x age + s ) kcal/day
- Weight is in Kilograms. /1 pound = 0.454 kilogram
- Height is in centimeters. /1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
- Age is in years.
- S is a factor to adjust for gender and adopts the value +5 for males and -161 for females.
After you have calculated your BMR, multiply that number based on your activity level listed in the chart below to determine how many calories you burn per day.
Recall if you want to lose a pound per week you need to reduce your calories (caloric intake) by 500 per day.
Activity Level Description Formula
Low Little to no exercise Calories Burned a Day = BMR x 1.2
Light 1-3 days a week of exercise Calories Burned a Day = BMR x 1.375
Moderate 3-5 days a week of exercise Calories Burned a Day = BMR x 1.55
High 6-7 days a week of exercise Calories Burned a Day = BMR x 1.725
Very High 2x a day of exercise Calories Burned a Day = BMR x 1.2
